Have you ever heard someone describe a timber deck as shining? Look at the images on this page and you’ll soon see that it can be a very appropriate description.

The timber deck in question was built by one of our Adelaide branches, Craig Arthur and his team from Southern Branch. The homeowners wanted a great looking, functional deck with a verandah they could sit under and not lose their beautiful views.

We’re sure you’ll agree that Craig and his team delivered on the brief. We’ll briefly explain how the brief was met and how such a great looking project was achieved.

‘Shining’ Adelaide timber deck

To create the functional deck, Craig used a wider decking board, 140mm merbau.

Merbau is probably the most common decking board chosen across the nation and for good reason. For starters, it’s one of the best looking timber decking boards on the market. With a rich red and brown hue, lovely fine grain and small golden flecks, Merbau looks good in practically any situation. Give it an oil every year or two and it truly shines and creates wow factor.

For a timber deck in Adelaide – or anywhere for that matter – merbau is also long lasting and durable, easy to work with, versatile and low maintenance. Most merbau used in Australia also comes from local, sustainable sources. Good to know if you’re concerned about the environment.

While there are other hardwoods – and also treated pine – that Craig could have used in the Adelaide timber deck, the merbau certainly does the job with style.

Adelaide verandah hits the heights

Careful consideration was also given to the verandah that was built over the deck by Craig and his team.

To ensure plenty of space under the verandah – and to make sure the beautiful views weren’t lost – a gable roof was chosen instead of, for example, a flat roof. This increases the actual and perceived space beneath the verandah. To further increase the height of the Adelaide verandah, Craig utilised several posts to raise the height of the verandah well above the roof line of the home.

In addition, a combination of Colorbond and polycarbonate sheets were used for the roof. The polycarbonate allows more natural light to stream into the verandah, which also increases the perception of more space.
