When you want an outdoor structure at your house, it’s not just choice of materials that will have a bearing on the final cost. Knowledge of local council planning and building approval regulations also play a vital part.

When the owners of this home in the Canberra suburb of Macgregor wanted a patio designed and built on a budget, they contacted Outside Concepts Canberra Southside’s Tony Cibiras. With years of experience in the approval process behind him, Tony quickly saw a way to eliminate the need for building approval for the patio, without compromising the homeowners’ needs. The solution? Simply to add two extra posts to the patio. The decision shaved hundreds of dollars off the total cost of the patio.

A further requirement of the homeowners was to build a carport that allowed light to enter the house through the adjoining window and sliding door. While most project builders would install one length of polycarbonate roofing to meet this requirement, Tony devised a better solution. He installed translucent roof sheeting along the entire row of the patio closest to the house, therefore letting more light to enter the window and door. The remaining roof was fitted with Colorbond sheeting.

“Outside Concepts has just completed a 5m X 5m patio at my home and we’re very happy with the final product. Tony has a mind for detail. His suggestion of positioning Laserlite panels work brilliantly and his commitment to addressing any of our concerns with no dramas ensured we ended up with a structure we wanted, all within budget.”
