When it comes to choosing framing and other materials for your outdoor project, new timber, steel and aluminium are the choices most often thought of. But there is another option and while it’s certainly not a new idea it’s fast becoming popular.

Recycled timber can be a great choice for your outdoor project, if you’re environmentally conscious, working to a budget or simply love the look of recycled timber. While new timber, particularly hardwood, often features appealing variations, recycled timber can be far more variable and this is an aspect that many people find appealing. Whether it’s old paint or another sealer, woodworm marks or other blemishes, recycled timber has character that new timber could never match.

Recently, a client of David Buntin, our Bayside Victoria branch manager, asked him to incorporate recycled timber beams in an outdoor project. The use of recycled timber wasn’t the only difference – the rear verandah required special engineering and design to ensure it would be safe, but the result was certainly worth it. The recycled timber beams feature beautiful variations, such as woodworm and other marks, which give the structure a special character. The beams are complemented by a solarspan roof. The clean and simple lines of the roof make the beams the main focal point and help to make the verandah one of a kind.
