Adding a new timber deck to your Adelaide home is one of the best ways of increasing the value of your property. A new deck will provide countless entertainment and relaxation options for you and tempt the hordes of Australians who want improved outdoor spaces when it comes time to sell.
How do you design and build a new timber deck for your home that will add the most value? Follow these tips from Outside Concepts and you’ll be well on your way.
Choose your timber (deck)
One of the first things you’ll notice when researching timber decks is that there are a variety of timber options. Which is best for your deck?
While it might sound cliché, the fact is that you really can’t go wrong. All timber that is sold for decks will do the job splendidly. The decision mostly comes down to budget and aesthetics.
If money is tight you might consider softwood timber decking boards and specifically treated pine. Treated pine can be left uncoated, but most people will add a stain to create a colour or tone they like and suits their home.
If budget isn’t such a concern, most people will choose hardwood because of the aesthetics. Hardwood doesn’t cost significantly more than treated pine and there really isn’t a better looking outdoor surface than a well maintained hardwood timber deck.
When choosing hardwood decking boards there are several options, including merbau, blackbutt, jarrah, Victorian ash and spotted gum. The choice really comes down to the look you’re trying to create, with merbau and jarrah a rich red colour and the other choices paler in tone.
One additional point to make on timber choice is for those that live in the Adelaide Hills and other areas where bushfire is a concern. Depending on where you live and the BAL or bushfire attack level rating of your area, you may still be able to build a timber deck but you’ll need to choose a timber with a high BAL rating.
Choose your timber deck design
A simple timber deck for your Adelaide home will look fantastic. However, if you really want to take it to the next level, consider adding some special features. For example:
Instead of a square or rectangular deck, think outside the square! It might be by adding two or more levels, two or more deck sections, rounding off part of your deck or adding timber decking steps.
Another feature you might consider is to add planter boxes made from timber decking. These could be placed along the sides or even in the middle of your timber deck if you have enough space.
Other features you could add include timber deck bench seating and screens. The latter is particularly good to hide, for example, a clothesline, water heater or HVAC system.
