When you think about custom-designed verandahs today, if you’re like most homeowners your mind likely drifts to scenes of relaxation and entertainment. Perhaps you imagine family barbecues on a warm summer evening, or a quiet coffee while enjoying the morning sun. However, it wasn’t all that long ago that verandahs served a very different, more practical purpose.
The traditional Australian verandah was often a workhorse of the home. Particularly in regional areas like Geelong. It was a space designed to protect the house from the harsh Australian sun. Wide verandahs shielded exposed walls from the relentless summer heat, helping to keep the home cooler naturally. This was particularly important before the days of air conditioning, when keeping the house cool relied heavily on passive cooling methods.
In addition to sun protection, verandahs were a practical extension of daily life. They provided a place to leave muddy boots, to store firewood for the winter months and to offer the family dog (often a trusty Kelpie or Heeler!) a cool, shaded spot to rest. For some homeowners, the verandah was also a sheltered area to complete chores or work on projects during wet weather.
Verandahs were a necessity, not a luxury, and their design reflected this. Functionality came first, often with wide eaves, basic timber posts and a simple roof to shield against the elements. The primary goal was to extend the usability of the home into the outdoors while offering protection from sun, rain and wind.
A Geelong verandah in 2025
Fast forward to today and the role of the verandah has evolved significantly. While its practical benefits remain, homeowners in Geelong increasingly see their verandah as a lifestyle feature—a place to unwind, entertain and enjoy outdoor living. A modern verandah can be a seamless extension of your home, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Today’s verandahs often incorporate stylish designs and a range of materials to suit the home’s aesthetics. Timber, steel and aluminium are popular choices, and roofing options range from classic corrugated iron to sleek polycarbonate panels that let in natural light. Homeowners also integrate features like outdoor furniture, lighting, heating and even outdoor kitchens to maximise comfort and functionality.
Despite the modern touches, the traditional value of a verandah is still very much alive. It continues to provide shade, reduce heat exposure and offer a covered space for everyday activities. The beauty of a verandah today is that it can be whatever you need it to be—practical, stylish or a blend of both.
