When Adelaide and indeed Australia was enduring the worst of the strict isolation rules (and our hearts to go out to all Victorians who are back under these rules) we turned to a variety of things to get us through. For some it was Netflix and wine, for others it was long walks and naps during the afternoons. But for those like us at Outside Concepts, there was one specific place that we retreated to, to relax and take stock, and that was our patio.

The value of having a patio – or any area outside where you could retreat to – in Adelaide and surrounds was never more important than during the lockdown period, but we’d suggest it’s a pretty important feature of your home at any time. Having a patio provides a base for a variety of relaxation and entertainment opportunities, and gets you and your family out into the fresh air more often.

Here’s how to plan for your private haven at home, by building a new Adelaide patio:

  • Practicality is really important if you’re to get the most out of your new Adelaide patio. To maximise the practicality of your outside space, think about how you’re going to use it. Are you an entertainer who likes to have large family gatherings, or get friends around for regular get-togethers? Or are you looking for an intimate space for yourself and your family? These questions will dictate the size of the patio you need for your Adelaide home and it’s very important to consider this well before a sod of turf is turned.
  • When you’ve worked out the approximate size of the Adelaide patio you’ll need, within the confines of your block, take it a step further by sketching it out on paper or, even better, marking it up outside. Don’t just put in the outline of your patio, mark-up where you’ll place your table and chairs, outdoor dining setting, barbecue and any other items that you intend to occupy the space. The value of doing this outside is that once everything is marked up, you can walk around to help identify any issues. For example, you don’t want to have to squeeze between chairs to get to and from the barbecue.
  • Practicality is important, but so too is the look. You’ll want an Adelaide patio that matches or complements your home, whether it’s a period style house, a modern construction or something in-between. Browse through magazines or on the Internet to get ideas for the look of your new patio.
  • An important aspect of your patio’s look will be the materials you choose. There will be a variety of options, such as timber, steel, aluminium, tiles, Polycarbonate, Colorbond and more to choose, so which is the best for your patio? Often the best bet is to draw inspiration from your home and the materials it features.
