Perk up your health in a Melbourne pergola
Here at Outside Concepts we don’t need an excuse to get into our pergolas more often, but if you do, here’s some advice that may motivate you. Getting outside more is good for your physical and mental health. That’s right, if you have a pergola at your Melbourne home and you use it regularly, you’re doing your body and mind a favour.
But don’t take our word for it. The advice comes from a perhaps more reputable source than us when looking at health matters, Science Daily.
In an article on their website three years ago, Science Daily laid out new research which gathered evidence from over 140 studies. Lead author of the research Caoimhe Twohig-Bennett, said: “Spending time in nature certainly makes us feel healthier, but until now the impact on our long-term wellbeing hasn’t been fully understood.
“We found that spending time in, or living close to, natural green spaces is associated with diverse and significant health benefits. It reduces the risk of type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, premature death, and preterm birth, and increases sleep duration. People living closer to nature also had reduced diastolic blood pressure, heart rate and stress.”
If this doesn’t tell us to get into our Melbourne pergolas more often, we don’t know what will!
Pop into your pergola
Before we go much further, you may be asking what exactly a pergola is. Traditionally a pergola was a free-standing, open-roofed structure used for outdoor dining. Generally it would have a deciduous climber growing over the top of it to provide shade in the summer and let the sun through in winter.
Today, however, a pergola often refers to any outdoor living structure. It can be free-standing and open roofed, but it may also be attached to a house and have a roof. In fact, it can even have one-half roofed and the other not. Or for that matter, an awning, louvered roof or retractable roof.
What you call your outdoor living area is up to you. Call it a pergola, call it a patio, call it a verandah. Just make sure you have one and use it regularly, for your health’s sake!
