Wondering How to Prepare Your Berwick Deck for Oiling?

If you have a timber deck in the Melbourne suburb of Berwick, chances are you haven’t given it much thought for 12 months or more. It’s copped abuse from feet, dog paws, birds, furniture, the elements and more, so it’s now time to give it a bit of tender loving care so that it will continue to look its best for the next 12 months.

Maintain your Berwick deck

One of the leading timber finishing companies once promoted that December was the best month to maintain your timber deck. While part of it was no doubt the play on words that ‘Deckember’ provided, there’s also a practical reason in that this time of the year is a great time to do the job. The days are generally warmer, you will be starting to use your timber deck more and you may also have a few days off work to do the job.

Not that it will take a few days. In fact, for most Berwick decks you can knock the job over in less than a day.

So, what does the job entail?

Three steps to re-oil a Berwick deck

  1. Start by giving your Berwick timber deck a good clean. Use a broom or blower to remove all leaves and other debris. Then use water and detergent or, preferably, a commercial deck cleaning solution to give all your timber boards a deep clean. Rinse off with a garden hose or a high-pressure sprayer and then allow to dry.
  2. Then apply oil with an applicator, roller or brush. While there are many brands and types of decking oil you can use, a water-based solution is a great idea. It will dry fast, allowing you to apply subsequent coats if needed and get back to using your deck quickly.
  3. If your timber deck hasn’t been oiled in quite a while or is showing signs of any deterioration, applying two coats and even three coats of oil is an excellent idea.
  4. “Hang on, you said there’d only be three steps.” And there really are. The fourth step is simply to stand back and enjoy the results, because you will be impressed!

As we alluded to in the opening paragraph, ideally you will re-oil your deck every 12 months. This will ensure your Berwick deck is well protected and will therefore last longer without requiring extra maintenance. Plus, it will keep your Berwick deck looking fantastic and virtually like new.
