While no brick walls were erected to build the carport in the Melbourne suburb of Sunbury, featured on this page, a few had to be knocked down before the project got underway. Confused? Don’t worry, the homeowner was too, before our Outside Concepts North Western & Western Melbourne branch came to the rescue.
Melbourne carport meets council regulations
Depending on where you live in Melbourne, if you want to build a new carport there are likely to be council regulations you will need to comply with. While there are councils that do allow some carports to be built without approval – so called exempt developments – in most instances you will need to get approval before construction begins.
As was the case in the Hume City Council area, where Sunbury is located. All new carport constructions require a building permit and this was causing issues for the homeowners. With a tight gap between the home and the fence and tight restrictions from the council about what could be built, the homeowners kept hitting brick wall after brick wall. That was until Outside Concepts stepped in.
We were able to get approval to design and build a long 11.5 metre carport for the homeowners. This is around twice as long as many carports and will allow the family to park two cars under the carport.
The resulting timber carport with a metal roof is not only practical, but also pleasing to the eye. It was also pleasing to the council, with the tight council building regulations safely met.
Knocking down brick walls to build your carport
Many people do find council regulations confusing – whether they’re building a carport or any other outside structure. There are several reasons for this confusion:
- Council building regulations are very process oriented and instructions can be full of legalese.
- Every local council has different regulations and the process – and costs – can vary significantly.
- There may be additional requirements, such as heritage listing regulations and bushfire prone area protection requirements you need to comply with.
- Navigating through the process can not only be confusing, but it can also take time and add months to your Melbourne carport timeline.
The good news is that, like the owners of this new carport in Sunbury, Outside Concepts can help.
All our branch managers are local people who have the knowledge and experience to meet the needs of council regulations and other authorities. Plus, if a permit or other red tape is required, they understand the application process and can often get approval quicker than if you applied yourself.
