To roof or not to roof, that is the question. Or to put it another way, ‘I’m considering adding a roof over an existing deck, but should I’?
If you’re like most people, if you were building a new patio, pergola or verandah in winter you would make sure the structure had a roof included. Or if you were asked in winter whether you should be adding a roof over an existing deck, you’d probably answer yes. After all, what good is an outside area for relaxation and entertaining if you can only use it when it’s dry? But if you were building an outdoor structure at another time of the year, the answer may not be as straightforward.
Of course the best decision is to build a patio, pergola or verandah for all seasons. For most parts of our country this means adding a roof over an existing deck to keep the rain and hot sun out of your outside structure is a must… Or does it?
The decision is very much an individual choice. For example, f you live in the southern states and don’t venture outside during winter, the cold and rain is less of a factor. Likewise, if you have another area you can use in the event of rain, a roof is less important. So, it’s vital to consider carefully how and when you will use the new structure well before you begin.
