Whether you want to spell it with or without the ‘h’ at the end, a verandah is a great addition to almost any home.

A verandah (or veranda, the spelling can be either but we prefer verandah) is, according to the Macquarie Dictionary, “an open or partly open portion of a house or other building, outside but abutting one or more of its principal rooms, covered either by a separate skillion roof or by the roof of the main structure”.

While many of us Aussies may think a verandah is quintessential Australian, the first verandah was erected well before we stuck one on a cottage to keep our dirty boots dry. The word’s origins are actually Indian or Portuguese and verandahs have been built, used and loved for many centuries.
